Victoria Bridge, Penrith
(Download time for image approx 30 seconds)

Victoria Bridge was constructed from 1862 to 1865 and for many years was used for both train and horsedrawn traffic. The width of the bridge was only 7.77 metres so a galvanised iron fence was erected down the centre of the bridge to separate the two modes of traffic.

Today Victoria Bridge carries two lanes of vehicles across the Nepean River as well as a pedestrian footpath. A separate railway bridge was constructed parallel to Victoria Bridge in 1907 and now carries the main western railway line from Sydney.
